Harry Kane: 'I've known about England captaincy for weeks'

Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane says that he has been aware that he would be named as the captain of England for the World Cup for 'a few weeks'.

Forward Harry Kane has revealed that England boss Gareth Southgate first told him that he would be captain for the World Cup 'a few weeks ago'.

Kane, Gary Cahill, Jordan Henderson and Eric Dier were the four realistic contenders to lead England in Russia, with Southgate previously opting against selecting a skipper on a permanent basis.

However, despite the development only being made public knowledge on Tuesday morning, Tottenham Hotspur striker Kane has said that he has needed to remain quiet on being given the honour.

At a press conference, the 24-year-old told reporters: "I found out a few weeks ago. I met Gareth at The Grove when the squad were there. We were talking for an hour or so and he said that he wanted me to be the captain.

"I've had to keep it quiet for a while now but as soon as he told me, I filled up with pride. I obviously went home and told the family and they got excited as well."

Kane has previously skippered England on four occasions.
