Sports Mole dissects the action as Borussia Dortmund record a 2-1 win over Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Borussia Dortmund have moved to the top of Group D this evening with an impressive 2-1 win over Real Madrid in Germany.

Dortmund took the lead 10 minutes before the break when Robert Lewandowski produced a cool finish inside the box, but Madrid were level two minutes later when Cristiano Ronaldo found the net.

However, Dortmund secured the three points after 64 minutes when Marcel Schmelzer found the bottom corner from close range.

Here, Sports Mole dissects the 90 minutes of action between the two Champions League rivals.

Was the result fair?

On the balance of play, you would have to say yes. Madrid dominated the vast majority of the ball, but they were lacklustre and registered just two shots on target. Dortmund were as you would expect, tidy on the ball and stern in defence. It was clash of two top European sides and the German outfit rightly secured all three points.

Borussia Dortmund's performance

8/10. Dortmund's domestic form this season has left a lot to be desired, but they were very impressive this evening. They pressed well in midfield and Mats Hummels and Nevan Subotic were wonderful in defence. Madrid have been earmarked as the favourites for the competition, but you can put the German outfit in the hat.

Real Madrid's performance

6/10. Make no mistake about it, Madrid were poor this evening. They entered the break level thanks to a wonderful finish from Ronaldo, but they never really kicked on after the interval. The likes of Angel di Maria and Mesut Ozil just did not turn up and Pepe was shaky in defence. They need to chalk this one off and move on quickly.

Sports Mole's man of the match

Mats Hummels: The German defender was simply wonderful this evening. The ball was a magnet to his head and he showed his class on the ground with fine distribution.

Biggest gaffe of the match

Angel di Maria was really poor this evening. The Argentine had plenty of the ball, but his choice of shot and cross were lacking throughout the 90 minutes.

Referee performance

Viktor Kassai had a fairly solid 90 minutes of action. The Hungarian was prepared to hand out bookings when he felt necessary, but also let the play flow in the correct areas.

What next?

Borussia Dortmund: Dortmund will attempt to ignite their Bundesliga campaign when they face Freiburg on Saturday, while they travel to Madrid in the Champions League on November 6.

Real Madrid: Madrid return to domestic action against Real Mallorca on Sunday, while they will host Dortmund in their next Champions League tie on November 6.
