Preview: Manchester City Women vs. West Ham United Women - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Sunday's Women's Super League clash between Manchester City Women and West Ham United Women, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Manchester City Women will look to maintain their unbeaten start to the season when they play host to West Ham United Women in Sunday's Women's Super League contest.

Meanwhile, the Hammers are searching for their first league win of the season after taking just one point from their first two WSL matches.

Man City have made a positive start to the season, having won three and drawn one of their four competitive matches.

Gareth Taylor's side began their campaign with a 5-0 away victory over Paris FC in Women's Champions League qualifying, before they drew 2-2 in their WSL opener against Arsenal.

After sweeping past Paris FC in the second leg, Man City went on to record a narrow 1-0 victory in last Sunday's home clash against Brighton & Hove Albion, with Khadija Shaw's first-half strike proving enough to separate the two sides.

Man City may already have one eye on Wednesday's mouthwatering Women's Champions League clash with reigning European champions Barcelona, but first, they must negotiate a home league meeting with West Ham.

The hosts will certainly fancy their chances of claiming all three points, having won each of their last six head-to-head meetings, including a comprehensive 5-0 win in their most recent clash in April.

Having taken one point from their first two matches, West Ham have now gone 11 WSL matches since claiming a surprise win over Arsenal in February.

The Hammers began the 2024-25 campaign with a heavy 3-0 defeat to Manchester United, before they salvaged a draw from last Sunday's home meeting with Liverpool.

Riko Ueki netted an 85th-minute equaliser to cancel out Olivia Smith's opener and West Ham got on the board with a valuable point.

Ueki got on the scoresheet again in midweek, scoring the final goal of a dominant 6-1 victory over second-tier Portsmouth in the Women's League Cup.

Seraina Piubel netted the opener against Pompey, while Emma Harries and Viviane Asseyi both registered braces to ensure that their side will head into the weekend in a positive mood, and they will hope that result can help propel them to their win over Man City since October 2021.

Team News

Manchester City Women's Alex Greenwood on September 22, 2024© Imago

Man City remain without goalkeeper Sandy MacIver and defender Risa Shimizu due to long-term knee injuries.

Full-back Leila Ouahabi has missed the last two matches and will have to be assessed ahead of Sunday's home fixture.

Netherlands international Jill Roord could be given more valuable minutes off the bench after she made her long-awaited return from injury to feature as a late substitute against Brighton.

As for the Hammers, Skinner is still having to cope without the services of defender Kirsty Smith and midfielder Jess Ziu.

Ruby Doe will have to be assessed after she was forced off in the first half of Wednesday's win over Portsmouth.

Skinner made several changes for the League Cup fixture, but she could revert back to the team that started the draw with Liverpool.

We say: Manchester City Women 3-1 West Ham United Women

Man City have made an encouraging start to the new season, and we think that they will produce another strong display to sweep past West Ham to build momentum and confidence ahead of Wednesday's European clash with Barcelona.
