Bastian Schweinsteiger 'will cost Manchester United £14m to axe'

A report claims that Bastian Schweinsteiger is likely to remain at Manchester United for at least another year due to his high wages putting off other sides.

Manchester United will reportedly have to pay £14m if they are to offload midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger this summer.

The 31-year-old, who failed to make an impression during his first campaign at Old Trafford, still has two years left to run on his current deal.

There has been talk in recent weeks of the Red Devils cutting their losses and axing the Germany international but, according to The Sun, Schweinsteiger's bloated wages have forced Jose Mourinho's hand.

It is claimed that the ex-Bayern Munich man will instead fight for his place at United after holding talks with Mourinho earlier this week, although French giants Paris Saint-Germain could be ready to pounce if his asking price is lowered.

A United source is quoted by the newspaper as saying: "Bastian will cost every penny of the £14m still owed to him on his two years left.

"He has had talks with Jose over his future but it is still uncertain at this stage. The new few weeks will reveal more. He will not be pushed out and will sit tight for a pay-off."

Schweinsteiger featured five times for Germany at the European Championship finals, including in the 2-0 semi-final defeat to France in Marseille one week ago.
