Pallister: 'Rivals jealous of Man United'

Former Manchester United centre-back Gary Pallister says that "quite a few teams will be jealous" of the Red Devils' 2016-17 campaign.

Former Manchester United centre-back Gary Pallister has claimed that "quite a few teams will be jealous" of how the Red Devils performed during the 2016-17 campaign.

Jose Mourinho could only lead Man United to a sixth-place finish in the Premier League last season, but the Portuguese landed the Community Shield, League Cup and Europa League during his first season at the helm.

Pallister has claimed that the return of Champions League football, which arrived after success in the Europa League, was the biggest plus point of the campaign, and denies that Mourinho underachieved after replacing Louis van Gaal.

"Obviously winning three trophies was fantastic in itself but the carrot for everybody at the end of the season was getting back into the Champions League. It means so much to the club, not just financially but for the fans and players who want to be involved in the biggest competition in the world," Pallister told United's official website.

"It was hugely important we got there and we did it in great style out in Stockholm. The win over Ajax stopped a lot of these doubters out there who were saying it was a poor season because United finished sixth.

"Okay, we didn't qualify for the Champions League through our Premier League position but we qualified by winning a European trophy and we also won the League Cup, not to mention the Community Shield. All in all, quite a few teams will be jealous of Manchester United's season."

United's preparations for the new campaign will begin with a pre-season tour of the United States next month.
