Danny Murphy: 'Raheem Sterling should consult teammates over new contract'

Ex-Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy urges Raheem Sterling to consult senior teammates over his new contract.

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has urged Raheem Sterling to seek the advice of senior players at the club as the youngster's contract saga rumbles on.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers stated that the England international had been offered an "incredible" new deal on Monday, but a recent report claimed that Sterling was ready to reject the contract.

Murphy told talkSPORT: "The best thing for young players to do, like I did with my second contract at Liverpool, is to speak to the senior players. The best, most impractical advice younger players can get is from the senior players of the club.

"Other players, who have been through it, will give you good advice. They will tell you what they think and be honest with you, they won't tell you that you're better or worse than you are.

"I used other players, like Jamie Redknapp and Mark Wright, who gave me advice. More young lads should look to them. Sterling's got Steven Gerrard who's been through it, it's logical to talk to him."

Sterling has scored nine times this term.
