Roberto Martinez: "Influential" Steven Gerrard will be missed

Roberto Martinez believes that Steven Gerrard's influence will be missed when he departs Liverpool for MLS.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has become the latest high-profile name to pay tribute to outgoing Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard.

The former England international will bring his 28-year association with the Reds to an end later this month when he packs his bags to join MLS outfit Los Angeles Galaxy.

Many of Gerrard's current and former colleagues have already talked up the illustrious career of the 34-year-old, while Martinez believes that Liverpool may miss his leadership qualities.

"He's a big player of specific generation. Every manager will tell you he has been an influential player," the Spaniard told reporters.

Martinez, who also revealed that defender Leighton Baines has undergone a successful operation on his ankle, is confident that the Toffees can use this season's difficulties to adapt to the demands of European football next season should they make the cut.

"If we were to qualify for the Europa League, I do believe our experiences this season would benefit us. Our younger players have developed in a difficult season, taking bigger roles earlier than expected," he added.

Everton see out their campaign with games against West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur.
