Huddersfield Town edge out Grimsby Town

Two late goals see Huddersfield Town overcome Grimsby Town in round three of the FA Cup.

Two late goals secured a 3-2 victory for Huddersfield Town away at Grimsby Town of the Conference in the FA Cup this afternoon.

Visiting Huddersfield started the tie brightly and struck the post with just four minutes on the clock through Martin Paterson.

It took Grimsby a little while to settle into the contest, but as soon as they gained a foothold, they broke the deadlock. Joe Colbeck sent over a cross from the right for Ross Hannah, who converted from close range.

Huddersfield dominated the reminder of the half, but they were unable to draw themselves level before the break.

However, it took them just six minutes into the second half to score an equaliser. Former Manchester United trainee Oliver Norwood was the scorer as he curled his free kick into the top corner of the Grimsby net.

Parity would only last for 10 minutes, though, as the home side regained the lead. Andy Cook's shot deflected towards the far post where captain Craig Disley was waiting to head in.

The hosts refused to retreat on their lead and they almost scored their third of the afternoon through Patrick Mclaughlin in the 76th minute, but his header was turned wide by Huddersfield goalkeeper Alex Smithies.

It would prove to be a vital intervention by Smithies because in the 86th minute Paterson was alert to score from six yards out to draw the away side level, and then in stoppage time Grimsby's Aswad Thomas put through his own net to seal Huddersfield's place in round four of the competition.
