Gareth Southgate reportedly stalls over agreeing to take over as England boss due to the Football Association's insistence on inserting a release clause in his contract.

The Football Association and Gareth Southgate have reportedly hit a stumbling block due to the governing body's insistence on inserting a break clause in his England managerial contract.

The 46-year-old is the only real candidate to take on the vacant Three Lions job and was interviewed for three hours over the position on Monday afternoon.

Widespread reports suggested that terms had been agreed and an official announcement would be made at some stage next week, but Sky Sports News claims that there is one big hurdle still to overcome.

It is suggested that Southgate is not entirely happy with the finer details of the contract, which includes a break clause that allows the FA to part company with the former Middlesbrough boss after the 2018 World Cup should they wish.

Southgate's representatives are said to have refused to accept the clause, which essentially means that he is on an 18-month deal and not the near-four-year contract that he was after.
