Terry Butcher expects a lengthy ban for Wayne Rooney

Terry Butcher expects England's Wayne Rooney to be suspended for at least two matches following his red card against Montenegro.

Former England defender Terry Butcher believes that Wayne Rooney will receive at least a two-match ban for his sending off against Montenegro.

Rooney was sent off for kicking Miodrag Dzudovic during England's 2-2 draw with Montenegro in their Euro 2012 qualifying match.

The 25-year-old will hear the length of his ban on Thursday when a UEFA disciplinary panel meet to discuss his suspension.

"If he gets one game he's the luckiest man in the world," said Butcher.

"He's got no defence and he just has to hope Uefa are lenient. He has had red cards before and UEFA may see it as a chance to make their mark.

"I would expect at least a two-game ban. He's got previous form and UEFA will look at this and I think they will say you just can't do it."

Rooney could be banned for up to three matches, which would rule him out of all of England's group stage matches at the Euro 2012 finals in Ukraine and Poland next summer.
