After finishing in a lowly 10th position last term, Brighton are looking to enjoy a successful campaign in Melissa Phillips's first home game in charge.

Following a busy summer of transfer activity, the new-look Brighton side began the new season with a narrow 2-1 victory against Everton.

Elisabeth Terland netted a brace inside 14 minutes to put the Seagulls in the driving seat, and while Megan Finnigan pulled a goal back in the second period, Brighton held firm to get their season up running with a win.

They will now turn their attention to Sunday's encounter, where they will have the chance to claim consecutive WSL victories for the first time since February/March 2022.

The Seagulls can draw inspiration from their impressive head-to-head record, having won their last three WSL games against the Hammers, including a 1-0 home victory when the two sides met in May.

West Ham began the new campaign with a new manager after former Tottenham Hotspur boss Rehanne Skinner replaced Paul Konchesky in the dugout.

Skinner's tenure began with a difficult home meeting with Manchester City, which ultimately ended in a 2-0 defeat following second-half efforts from Lauren Hemp and Jill Roord.

As a result of the opening-day defeat, West Ham have now won just one of their last 13 matches in the top flight (D3, L9).

That sole victory took place against Leicester City in their final away game of the 2022-23 season, ensuring that they have the chance to claim consecutive away victories in the WSL for the first time since March/April 2022.

They are also looking to clinch their first away league victory over Brighton since running out 3-1 winners in October 2019.

Team News

Brighton & Hove Albion Women's Elisabeth Terland celebrates scoring their first goal with Lee Geum-min on March 12, 2023© Reuters

After Brighton kicked off the new season with a victory, Phillips could name an unchanged starting lineup for their first home match of the new campaign.

Summer signing Maria Thorisdottir, who made her debut last weekend, will continue to operate in a back three alongside Guro Bergsvand and Emma Kullberg.

Terland will look to add to the two goals that she scored last weekend when she leads the line alongside Lee Geum-min.

As for the visitors, Iceland international Dagny Brynjarsdottir is currently on maternity leave, while Amber Tysiak is a doubt after missing the defeat to Man City.

Despite overseeing a loss in her first game in charge, Skinner is expected to opt for consistency and select the same starting XI for Sunday's encounter.

Riko Ueki, who made her debut last weekend, will feature in the West Ham forward line, and hope to open her goalscoring account for her new club.

Brighton & Hove Albion Women possible starting lineup:
Baggaley; Bergsvand, Thorisdottir, Kullberg; Robinson, Losada, Olme, Bremer, Pattinson; Terland, Lee

West Ham United Women possible starting lineup:
Arnold; Shimizu, Cissoko, Cooke; Evans, Stringer, Filis, Hayashi, Smith; Ueki, Asseyi

SM words green background

We say: Brighton & Hove Albion Women 2-1 West Ham United Women

Brighton strengthened their squad considerably over the summer, and with a number top quality players in their squad, we think that they will prove too strong for West Ham in Sunday's contest.
