Sam Vokes goal wins Lancashire derby for Burnley

Burnley strengthen their grip on second place in the Championship table after seeing off Lancashire rivals Bolton Wanderers 1-0 at the Reebok Stadium.

A second-half Sam Vokes goal was enough to see off Bolton Wanderers in the Lancashire derby to strengthen Burnley's grip on second place in the Championship.

An early slip from Burnley keeper Tom Heaton almost gave the hosts a dream start, but Kieran Trippier cleared the ball before any Bolton players could tap home.

Heaton made amends moments later after pulling off a relatively routine save from Lee Chung-Yong's strike, with the South Korean cutting inside before getting his shot away.

It was Chung-Yong who again came close to giving the Trotters the lead with 10 minutes on the clock, following his deflected strike which came back off the crossbar to keep the scores level.

Burnley had to soak up the early pressure before finally coming close themselves. Scott Arfield found the ball at his feet just outside the opposition area, but the winger could not direct his effort on goal.

Just 20 seconds into the second half, Adam Bogdan had to produce a fine save to deny a long-range David Jones effort to keep the scores level.

Burnley eventually made the breakthrough shortly before the hour, as Sam Vokes tapped home the opener after a cross into the box from Michael Kightly.

Former Claret winger Chris Eagles came close to levelling the contest, but his shot ended up going narrowly over the bar.

The hosts threw everyone forward in the closing minutes as they chased an equaliser, though it wasn't to be as Burnley held on for the points.
