Bolton Wanderers midfielder Fabrice Muamba remains critically ill but is showing "small signs of improvement".

Bolton Wanderers midfielder Fabrice Muamba has shown "small signs of improvement" over the past 24 hours.

The 23-year-old has been in intensive care since suffering a cardiac arrest during Saturday's FA Cup tie against Tottenham Hotspur.

Over the weekend, joint statements from the London Chest Hospital and Wanderers had said that the Congo-born player was in a critical condition.

Although he still remains in a similar condition, a statement released this afternoon has revealed that Muamba's heart is now beating without the aid of medication.

"Fabrice Muamba remains in intensive care at The London Chest Hospital, where today he is showing small signs of improvement," read a statement.

"His heart is now beating without the help of medication and he is also moving his arms and his legs.

"However, his long-term prognosis will remain unclear for some time. He is still critically ill and will continue to be closely monitored and treated by staff in the London Chest Hospital's intensive care unit."

Meanwhile, Sky Sports News have claimed that he has been able to hold hands with family members.
