Bayern Munich thrash Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker

Bayern Munich extend their lead in the Bundesliga after thumping nearest rivals Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker.

Bayern Munich have increased their lead at the top of the Bundesliga after a comfortable victory over Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker.

Thomas Tuchel's side started brightly at the Allianz Arena, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan finding space on the flank early on, but the Armenian's intended ball for Shinji Kagawa was collected easily by Manuel Neuer.

Bayern went close themselves midway through the first half when Douglas Costa sprinted down the left wing and his cross managed to evade the reach of Roman Burki, leaving Lukasz Piszczek to clear the danger.

The champions took the lead after cutting Die Borussen apart on 26 minutes with a slide-rule pass finding Thomas Muller, who lifted the ball over the onrushing Burki before slotting into an empty net.

Pep Guardiola's men were then awarded a penalty later in the opening period after Thiago Alcantara managed to wrong-foot Mkhitaryan, who duly brought down the former Barcelona man in the box. Muller calmly stepped up and tucked away the spot kick as Bayern looked to be running away with the game.

The visitors hit back before the interval as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang shook off his marker to turn home Gonzalo Castro's cross from close range.

However, Bayern restored their two-goal advantage in farcical circumstances as Burki's attempt to block Robert Lewandowski's shot saw the keeper leapfrog the ball and allowed the Polish striker to slip the ball into an empty net.

Lewandowski then scored his second and Bayern's fourth as he turned home Mario Gotze's cross before Gotze himself added a fifth on 66 minutes.

The Bavarians' victory leaves them seven points clear of Die Borussen at the top of the Bundesliga.
