Former Netherlands international midfielder Mark van Bommel calls time on his career and ends it with a red card.

Former Bayern Munich and AC Milan midfielder Mark van Bommel has announced his retirement from football.

The 36-year-old made the announcement following PSV Eindhoven's 3-1 defeat to Twente in the Eredivisie on Sunday in a match that saw him sent off for two bookable offences.

"I was unsure [about retiring] for a long time and the fans made it difficult for me," he told De Telegraaf. "I might have been able to do another year but I wanted to be the master of my destiny.

"The red card I received was perhaps a reflection of the whole season. I particularly remember the best moments. I had 20 minutes to reflect on this remark."

Van Bommel also played for Barcelona and earned 79 caps for the Netherlands national team.
