Atletico Madrid knock Galatasaray out to progress

Antoine Griezmann scores twice as Atletico Madrid progress to the last 16 of the Champions League with a 2-0 win over Galatasaray which knocks the Turkish side out.

Antoine Griezmann's double has seen Atletico Madrid knock out a lifeless Galatasaray side with a 2-0 victory and seal the Spanish outfit's place in the Champions League last 16.

Atletico knew that victory would assure them of a place in the last 16 and lift them to the top of the group after Benfica were held to a 2-2 draw by Astana earlier on Wednesday, and they put the Turkish side under pressure from the first whistle.

However, it was the visitors who should have taken the lead against the run of play after 12 minutes when Wesley Sneijder burst through on goal but saw his low drive tipped away by Jan Oblak.

Atletico made their opponents rue that missed opportunity within a minute, as top scorer Griezmann took advantage of a lack of marking to drift into the box and head Gabi's cross past Fernando Muslera.

Muslera held on to a volleyed effort from the French striker as the hosts pushed for a second goal, and with Galatasaray showing few signs of life, Koke fired narrowly wide as Diego Simeone's side continued to dominate.

Diego Godin headed narrowly over from Gabi's corner as the game descended into a scrappy affair before the break, but the pattern of the match continued after the restart as Koke's effort was clawed away by Muslera at the near post.

Fernando Torres's search for his 100th Atletico goal went on as his first-time flick fell just wide, but the home side put the game and their place in the last 16 beyond doubt when Griezmann tapped home Gabi's low cross to double the lead with 25 minutes remaining.

Muslera denied substitute Luciano Vietto and Torres as the Spanish side pressed for further goals, but they had to settle for two as they progressed to the last 16 and knocked Galatasaray out.
