Athletic Bilbao edged out by lowly Elche

Elche pick up a rare victory in La Liga to move off the bottom of the table, edging out Athletic Bilbao 2-1 at San Mames this evening.

Elche have picked up just their third victory of the season to climb off the bottom of the La Liga table with a 2-1 win at Athletic Bilbao.

The visiting side, who had failed to pick up all three points in their last seven outings coming into this one, put themselves ahead inside 17 minutes when Victor Rodriguez found the back of the net.

Jonathas picked out his teammate on the edge of the box, and the Levski Sofia loanee managed to take control of the ball before dinking it over Gorka Iraizoz.

As the half progressed Bilbao almost levelled things up, coming closest to doing so when Aritz Aduriz struck an effort which flew narrowly wide of the target.

Los Franjiverdes doubled their advantage eight minutes after the interval when Jonathas cut the ball back for Faycal Fajr to fire home, giving the lowly visitors a dream two-goal lead.

Mikel San Jose rifled home a fine effort into the top corner from the edge of the box to cut the deficit with a little under 20 minutes left to play, but Les Leones were unable to create any more openings in the remaining time to ensure that Elche picked up a rare triumph.

Bilbao remain 12th following the defeat, while Fran Escriba's charges move up one place to 19th and within two points of safety.
