Preview: Stevenage vs. Gillingham - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's EFL Trophy clash between Stevenage and Gillingham, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Stevenage will host Gillingham in the 2024-25 EFL Trophy at the Lamex Stadium on Tuesday, hoping to bounce back from their last group-stage defeat.

The hosts are second in Group L with three points, while the visitors are bottom of the group having lost their opening two matches.

Stevenage have not won a competitive game in 90 minutes since the 1-0 victory away at Mansfield Town in a League One clash on October 19.

Boro have lost three matches since then, while they have drawn the most recent, though they went ahead to win one of those by defeating Guiseley via penalties in an FA Cup first-round game.

After narrowly missing out on the playoffs by five points last term, manager Alex Revell will not be too pleased with his side's start to the season, as they are currently 14th in the League One table after 15 matches, six points off the final playoff spot.

Having kicked off their EFL Trophy campaign with a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace Under-21s, Stevenage lost 2-0 to Peterborough United in their second game of the competition.

Revell's side will hope to get back on track in the competition when they take on Gillingham, a side they have not lost to in their last three meetings, with two wins and one draw.

However, Stevenage have not won any of their last four home matches in 90 minutes, losing and drawing two each in those matches.

Gillingham successfully ended a seven-match unbeaten streak across all competitions with a 1-0 win over Port Vale in League Two on Saturday.

The Gills are eighth in the league table with 23 points, one point behind the final playoff spot. However, they are struggling in cup competitions.

Mark Bonner's side exited the FA Cup in the first round after losing 2-0 against Blackpool on November 2, while they have also lost their opening two matches in the EFL Trophy.

Gillingham won 1-0 the last time they played Stevenage in this competition in 2014, which coincidentally was their last win in this fixture and was at the Lamex Stadium.

Team News

Tyreece Simpson has scored Stevenage's only goal in the EFL Trophy so far and is expected to start in a front two alongside Jamie Reid.

Daniel Kemp, who scored in the draw with Reading last time out, should be expected to start behind both strikers, providing creative support.

Gillingham will remain without 26-year-old defender Robbie McKenzie, who is set to miss a seventh straight match for the visitors.

Aaron Rowe has been out injured since August and continues his lengthy spell on the sidelines, while 28-year-old forward Elliott Nevitt is a doubt, having missed each of the last five games.

Stevenage possible starting lineup:
Cooper; Smith, Thompson, Piergianni, Butler; Phillips, White, Freeman; Kemp; Reid, Simpson

Gillingham possible starting lineup:
Turner; Masterson, Ehmer, Ogie, Hutton, Clarke; Little, Dieng, Williams; Wakeling, Wyllie

We say: Stevenage 1-0 Gillingham

Stevenage might be on a winless streak, but the hosts have proven in the past that their quality will see them through when they face a lower-quality opposition, which is why we are predicting a win for the home side.
