Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Leonardo admits that signing centre-back Sergio Ramos was a "mistake" and he takes full responsibility for the transfer.

Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Leonardo has admitted that signing centre-back Sergio Ramos was a "mistake" and he has taken full responsibility for the transfer.

After 16 trophy-laden years with Spanish giants Real Madrid, Ramos made the switch to Paris on a free transfer last summer, where he has since endured a frustrating spell at the Parc des Princes.

The 35-year-old has been suffering with a niggling calf problem all season and has been restricted to just five games across all competitions.

Ramos penned a two-year deal with PSG in July last year; however, Leonardo has since admitted that the signing of the Spanish defender was a mistake.

"We signed him and he was physically fine. But as of today, he has only played five games," Leonardo told L'Equipe.

"Unfortunately, what we imagined of him at our club did not happen. It is difficult for him, for everyone. Not playing makes it difficult for him to be a leader. We will wait before drawing conclusions, the season is not over.

"But I am not afraid to take responsibility for mistakes when I make them. Nasser [Al-Khelaifi] gives me total confidence. It gives me real autonomy and for that I thank the club."

Ramos remains sidelined with a calf injury and will miss Saturday's Ligue 1 clash away at Champions League-chasing Nice.
