Peterborough beat Bristol City to grab three vital points in a bottom-of-the-table clash in the Championship.

Peterborough United recorded their first win of 2012 today, beating Bristol City 3-0 in a bottom-of-the-table clash in the Championship.

The home side came into the match as one of only two Championship teams without a win in 2012, and also on the longest winless run in the division but. Despite this, they were ahead within 10 minutes.

George Boyd's header was cleared off the line by Liam Fontaine only for Lee Tomlin to nod in the rebound.

Peterborough continued to push on, with David Ball twice being denied by David James in the space of a minute.

They almost doubled their lead just after the half-hour mark when Grant McCann's corner was met by Gabriel Zakuani, but his header only found the crossbar.

Tomlin was the next to threaten for the Posh, his half volley from 25 yards dipping just over the crossbar.

City held on until half time, and almost grabbed an equaliser just before the interval when Brett Pitman's flick narrowly missed.

The visitors started the second half much better, with Pitman firing just wide before floating a corner on to the head of Fontaine, who saw his effort brilliantly saved by Paul Jones.

Another Pitman corner then caused problems, this time Stephen McManus getting on the end of it, only for his shot to be cleared off the line by Lee Frecklington.

Despite this great start to the half for City, it was the hosts that got the crucial second goal.

McCann's pass found Ball, who went past McManus before slipping the ball beyond the grasp of James.

It could have been three later on when Tomlin's volley was well saved, allowing Boyd to cut the ball back to substitute Emile Sinclair, who then missed an open goal.

They did eventually get their third late on, however, when Sinclair rolled the ball to Tomlin who was left with an easy finish inside the box.
