Police confirm second match-fixing investigation underway

Police confirm the launch of a second match-fixing investigation after claims that a player has arranged for yellow cards to be picked up in exchange for cash.

Police have confirmed that a second match-fixing enquiry has been launched following reports that a Championship game was fixed.

The Sun has handed over evidence of their investigations, which claim that a player would arrange for his teammates to get booked in exchange for money, to the National Crime Agency.

The newspaper also revealed that the player alleged that he could offer the same deal for games in the Premier League and would be willing to organise World Cup matches next summer to be fixed.

Football League chief executive, Shaun Harvey told reporters: "We treat any allegations of criminal activity in our competitions with the utmost seriousness.

"Given that there is an ongoing police investigation into this matter, we cannot comment further at this time.

"We would encourage anyone with any evidence to report it to the police. We will be giving our full assistance to the Police during their investigation."

Non-league pair Michael Boateng and Hakeem Adelakun, who have both since been sacked by Conference South side Whitehawk FC, were charged this week with conspiracy to defraud contrary to common law.
