Netherlands international Virgil van Dijk insists that he has not held talks with Liverpool over a new contract.

Virgil van Dijk has insisted that he has not held talks with Liverpool over a new contract at Anfield.

The Netherlands international still has little under four years left to run on the deal that he signed with the Reds upon his arrival from Southampton in January 2018.

Earlier this month, it was reported that the centre-back had agreed a new six-year contract with the Champions League winners, with an announcement on the extension set to be made public.

However, the 28-year-old has said that "there is nothing going on" when it comes to a potential new deal.

"There is nothing going on, so that's it," Van Dijk told Sky Sports News. "I saw some reports in the media that I was agreeing a new deal and stuff.

"But I'm not even discussing anything at the moment. The only thing I want to do right now is focus on the games and we'll see in the future what may happen."

Van Dijk, who helped Liverpool win their sixth European Cup last season, has contributed eight goals in 80 appearances for the Reds during his time at the club.

Both Real Madrid and Barcelona are said to be desperate to sign the former Groningen youngster, although it seems unlikely that Jurgen Klopp's side would sanction a sale due to his importance.
