Crysencio Summerville scored an 89th-minute winner to help Leeds United beat Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield and climb out of the relegation zone.

Rodrigo was gifted the game's opening goal in just the fourth minute before Mohamed Salah equalised 10 minutes later with a close-range finish.

However, it was Leeds who had the last laugh with Summerville scoring a day before his 21st birthday on just his second Premier League start to help Jesse Marsch's men snatch all three points at the death.

Leeds have now risen to 15th in the Premier League table, sitting just one point clear of the drop zone with a game in hand, while Jurgen Klopp's side – who have lost successive league matches following last weekend's defeat at Nottingham Forest – have slipped down to ninth place, eight points behind the top four.

Indeed, Liverpool got off to the worst possible start when Joe Gomez played a poor back-pass into his own penalty area, unaware that goalkeeper Allison Becker was off his line, with Rodrigo nipping into the six-yard box to tap into an empty net.

Leeds' lead was short-lived, however, as the hosts responded well with Andrew Robertson – a constant threat down the left flank – setting up Salah at the back post to volley beyond Illan Meslier.

While Liverpool certainly had their fair share of chances, Marsch's men dusted themselves down and came close to restoring their advantage in the 21st minute when a teasing delivery from right-back Rasmus Kristensen picked out Brenden Aaronson who directed a first-time effort onto the crossbar.

Liverpool continued to dominate proceedings in the second half, but Leeds remained a threat on the counter-attack and were thankful for an inspired man-of-the-match performance from Meslier, who was equal to every strike that came his way.

Shortly after keeping out a driven shot from Robertson, Leeds' French goalkeeper produced a huge save in the 67th minute to deny a one-on-one from Darwin Nunez before tipping a long-range effort from the Uruguayan over the bar.

Liverpool continued to push forward in search of a winner in the final 10 minutes, but Meslier produced further heroics to keep out a scuffed shot and a powerful header from Roberto Firmino either side of a drilled strike from inside the left channel by Salah.

Despite Liverpool's attempts to breach Leeds' backline, it was two youngsters for the visitors in Wilfried Gnonto – coming off the bench to make his Premier League debut – and Summerville who combined to snatch a crucial victory in the dying embers.

Gnonto fizzed a low-driven cross into the danger zone towards Patrick Bamford, who teed up Summerville before the latter held off Virgil van Dijk and placed a strike with the outside of his right boot into the far corner, sending the Leeds supporters into pandemonium.

Three points secured for the West Yorkshire outfit eases the pressure on Marsch, who had seen his side end a eight-game run without a win – including four successive defeats – to climb out of the relegation zone, ending Liverpool's 29-game unbeaten league run at Anfield in the process.

As for the Reds, the pressure is mounting on Klopp's shoulders, with his team suffering their fourth Premier League defeat of the season, twice as many than they lost in the whole of last season.

The Merseysiders have also slipped 13 points behind table-toppers Manchester City, and this significant gap to the summit could increase to 15 points if Arsenal do what Liverpool could not do in beat Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

Leeds will be looking to secure successive league victories when they welcome Bournemouth to Elland Road next weekend, while Liverpool will now prepare for an important Champions League clash with Napoli on Tuesday before travelling to Tottenham Hotspur next Sunday.
