Italian FA president hints at Claudio Ranieri appointment

The president of the Italian Football Federation Carlos Tavecchio admits that he wants to see Claudio Ranieri win the World Cup with Italy.

President of the Italian Football Federation Carlo Tavecchio has hinted that Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri is on his radar to replace the outgoing Antonio Conte.

Conte will leave his role as Azzurri boss after Euro 2016 this summer to take the reins at Chelsea, where he will come up against a Leicester side who are English champions.

Ranieri steered the Foxes to the most unlikely of triumphs, and Tavecchio admitted that he now wants to see the 64-year-old lift the World Cup with his home country.

"I hope Ranieri can win a World Cup with Italy, that would be the best," he told ANSA.it.

"I'm speaking in an abstract way, of course, and not necessarily about the next World Cup. Claudio is still young and will have time on his side.

"Have we thought about him as a replacement for Conte? It's him who should be thinking about us! We're thinking about a lot of different things right now, but those in his second sporting homeland are wishing him every success."

Ranieri's only previous foray into international management ended in ignominy with defeat to the Faroe Islands during his time in charge of Greece.
