Leeds United survive Bolton Wanderers fightback to claim narrow victory

Leeds United survive a spirited Bolton Wanderers fightback to claim a 3-2 win in Sunday's Championship opener at the Macron Stadium.

Leeds United have secured a 3-2 win in their first Championship match of the season against newly-promoted Bolton Wanderers in Sunday's clash at the Macron Stadium.

The visitors took the lead after just seven minutes when a corner whipped in low by Pablo Hernandez was curled home first time by Kalvin Phillips.

On the half-hour mark, Thomas Christiansen's charges found themselves two goals to the good, Kemar Roofe's cross being headed back across goal by Ezgjan Alioski and nodded home by Chris Wood via the crossbar.

The hosts managed to halve the deficit six minutes before half time, however, when Gary Madine headed a Josh Vela corner past Felix Wiedwald.

However, Leeds restored their two-goal advantage just three minutes later, Hernandez playing in Wood, who beat the offside trap and teed up for Phillips to slot away his second.

Bolton were once again given hope of mounting a comeback when Madine was hauled down in the box 67 minutes in, prompting the referee to award a penalty that Adam Le Fondre coolly slotted down the middle.

With the clock ticking, the Trotters upped their attacks, but Leeds held firm at the back to claim all three points, while the hosts suffered yet more misery as Vela had to be stretchered off late in stoppage time.
