Lucien Favre sacked by Borussia Dortmund

Lucien Favre leaves in the wake of Saturday's 5-1 loss to Stuttgart.

Borussia Dortmund have parted company with head coach Lucien Favre.

Favre leaves in the wake of Saturday's 5-1 loss to Stuttgart – a third defeat in five which sees them trailing Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich by five points in fifth place.

The 63-year-old, who had guided the Black and Yellows into the last 16 of this season's Champions League, spent two years in charge at the Westfalenstadion.

His assistant coach Edin Terzic will take over on an interim basis until the end of the season.

Sebastian Geppert and Otto Addo will join Terzic's coaching team.

Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke said in a statement released on Twitter: "We are all grateful for Lucien Favre and his excellent work over the past two-and-a-half years, where he and his team finished as runner-up twice. Beyond any doubt, Lucien Favre is a great professional and person."
