Both men gave little away during a hard-fought opening set, but it was Federer who rolled back the years in an exciting tie-break to come through 9-7.

Djokovic called for the trainer at the start of the second following a fall on the grass, and it looked to make a difference as an early break saw him move into a 3-1 lead thanks to some trademark hitting from the back of the court.

While the Serb looked stifled in the first set, he was soon finding his rhythm. Holding onto the break, he was able to dig in around the court and serve out the set 6-4.

Federer fought valiantly in the third, dancing around the baseline to bring up two break points, though he squandered both of these as the set was eventually decided by the second tie-break of the match.

With the first breaker being a nip-and-tuck affair, Djokovic was dominant this time around as a 7-4 triumph put him in control of the contest.

The two men then exchanged breaks in the middle of the fourth before Djokovic broke once more to open up a 4-2 advantage. Federer swiftly clawed back one the breaks, and he managed to save a match point at 4-5 as Djokovic looked to finish off the veteran.

However, Federer fought back to break again before closing out the set 7-5, much to the delight of the Centre Court crowd.

There was little to separate the pair during a tense fifth set as both men fought doggedly. Break points were saved between them, only for Djokovic to finally break the Federer serve to close out the match 6-7[4] 6-4 7-6[4] 5-7 6-4 with four hours on the clock.
