Super League roundup: St Helens go top of the table

St Helens replace Wigan Warriors at the top of the table on a busy day of Super League action.

St Helens have replaced Wigan Warriors at the top of the Super League table with a 38-16 triumph at home to Castleford Tigers.

The Saints were dominant throughout at Langtree Park as seven tries, including two from Paul Wellens, saw them come away with the points.

While St Helens came through their match with few problems on Sunday, Wigan were beaten 36-28 at Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.

The high-scoring encounter, which featured 11 tries, was finely balanced before Reece Lyne touched down in the dying minutes to help the Wildcats seal a memorable win.

Leeds Rhinos are now in second place in the table after they came from behind to earn a 38-28 victory at Widnes Vikings.

Despite trailing 16-10 following a hard-fought opening 40 minutes, tries from Kevin Sinfield, Liam Sutcliffe, Tom Briscoe, Danny McGuire and Josh Walters saw Leeds turn the game around.

Meanwhile, Warrington Wolves kept their hopes of a playoff place alive thanks to a 36-20 victory at home to Salford City Reds.

The Wolves opened up a commanding 22-6 lead at the break before Rhys Evans and Ben Currie both went over during the second period to secure a seventh consecutive triumph for their side.
