Huddersfield Giants pip Leeds Rhinos in Yorkshire derby

Leeds Rhinos miss the chance to move top of the Super League after losing 24-22 to West Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Giants.

Leeds Rhinos have missed the chance to move top of the Super League after losing 24-22 to West Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Giants at Headingley tonight.

It was the hosts who drew first blood in the local derby as Kallum Watkins touched down after six minutes, with Kevin Sinfield adding the extras.

The lead proved shortlived, however, as Huddersfield were back on level terms within three minutes courtesy of a Kyle Wood try.

Leeds secured a six-point half-time lead, as Ben Jones-Bishop crossed over to put Brian McDermott's side in the driving seat at the break.

The Giants emerged from the interval reinvigorated and shortly opened up a 12-point lead. Jermaine McGillvary and Eorl Crabtree both touched down within 16 minutes of the restart, before Joe Wardle added a fourth try moments later.

Ryan Bailey and Liam Sutcliffe both bagged tries to reduce the arrears to just two points and ensure that Huddersfield faced a fight in their bid to claim the bragging rights.

However, Paul Anderson's side held on to leapfrog Warrington Wolves into fifth.
