Preview: Preston North End vs. Wycombe Wanderers - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday's Championship clash between Preston North End and Wycombe Wanderers, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Saturday sees Wycombe Wanderers travel to Preston North End as they chase their third win of the season that could see them leap out of the bottom three.

Wycombe were defeated by an in-form Stoke City side last time out, losing 1-0 at Adams Park, while Preston were back in the points with a notable win over promotion-chasing Bournemouth.

Match preview

Scott Sinclair scored a spectacular long-range effort on Tuesday night, helping the Lilywhites to all three points after they had appeared to let a 2-0 lead slip.

Preston surged into a two-goal advantage against the Cherries and, despite conceding late on, they were able to go on to seal their fifth away win of the season - maintaining the best away form in the division, in which they are also top scorers.

That statistic is partly down to the resurgence of Tom Barkhuizen, who after a run of 24 Championship games without a goal, has scored three in his last four games in the competition.

Preston have won their last five matches against Wycombe Wanderers in all competitions, with this their first meeting since January 2018 in the FA Cup, when they secured a 5-1 win.

That day, current Preston duo Josh Harrop and Alan Browne both scored braces with the other goal scored by Daryl Horgan, who now plays for the Chairboys.

As for Wycombe, fans will have been pleased that they were one of six EFL clubs in a position to admit fans in midweek, and the joy and relief at the ground was there for all to see.

Alas, it ended in defeat as Nick Powell's header was enough to give the Potters the win, and they are now back on the road where their form has been anything but convincing.

In a run stretching back to December 2019, Wycombe have lost 11 of their last 14 away league games, with only Coventry City earning fewer points on the road than the Chairboys in the Championship this season.

Wycombe are winless in their last 12 competitive matches against Preston since beating them 4-2 in the 1994 fourth-tier playoff final at Wembley.

Team News

Patrick Bauer scores for Preston against Bournemouth in the Championship on December 1, 2020© Reuters

Preston North End centre-back Patrick Bauer will miss the rest of the season following an Achilles tendon injury.

The 28-year-old was hurt late on in his side's 3-2 win at Bournemouth on Tuesday, having earlier scored their third goal at the Vitality Stadium.

Defender Paul Huntingdon will likely fill in for the injured Bauer.

Wycombe will assess the fitness of Curtis Thompson and Dennis Adeniran, who came off injured last weekend.

Gareth Ainsworth will also need to make a call on Dominic Gape, Darius Charles, Uche Ikpeazu and Ryan Tafazolli, who are also undergoing checks on their injuries.

Preston North End possible starting lineup:
Rudd; Storey, Huntingdon, Davies; Pearson; Sinclair, Barkhuizen, Potts, Johnson; Jakobsen, Maguire

Wycombe Wanderers possible starting lineup:
Allsopp; Grimmer, Stewart, Knight, Jacobson; Wheeler, Adeniran, Bloomfield; McCleary, Akinfenwa, Horgan

We say: Preston North End 2-1 Wycombe Wanderers

Preston have been far from their best at Deepdale this season, but we see them coming out on top against a Wycombe side who have failed to secure a win in their last five matches.
