Wolverhampton Wanderers relegation woes worsen with Burnley defeat

Wolverhampton Wanderers' relegation woes worsen as they fall to defeat against Burnley in their Championship clash at Molineux.

Wolverhampton Wanderers' relegation woes were worsened as they fell to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Burnley in their Championship clash.

After riding out some early pressure from the home side, Burnley took the lead when Danny Ings was allowed time and space in the Wolves area and his low shot found the bottom corner.

The visitors almost doubled their lead but former Wolves striker Sam Vokes saw his effort well saved by Dorus de Vries, while Ings was denied on the rebound by a good defensive block.

The home side should have been level when Burnley goalkeeper Lee Grant dropped a cross at the feet of Bjorn Sigurdarson, but his effort was blocked on the line.

After the break the situation got worse for Wolves when Martin Paterson doubled Burnley's lead in the 52nd minute after the hosts failed to clear their lines from a corner.

Vokes almost made it three when he turned his marker on the edge of the area and fired a shot at goal that went just over the bar.

Wolves' hopes of getting a result out of the game were raised when Burnley defender Michael Duff was sent off for a second bookable offence.

With three minutes left in the game, Wolves finally got their goal through Nouha Dicko as he fired the ball past Grant from close range, but it wasn't enough to save them from defeat.
