Ray Wilkins: 'I came close to managing West Bromwich Albion, Wolves'

Ray Wilkins reveals that he was in the running to become manager at West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2012.

Aston Villa assistant boss Ray Wilkins has revealed that he previously held talks with West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers about taking over as manager.

The 59-year-old former Chelsea coach joined Tim Sherwood's backroom team this season, but he could have been in the spotlight himself had he taken jobs elsewhere.

In 2012, Wilkins held talks with West Brom chairman Jeremy Peace about moving to The Hawthorns, but in the end, they opted for Steve Clarke.

"I went and had a chat with Jeremy Peace and Dan Ashworth and there was one other finance guy in there as well," the Daily Mail quotes Wilkins as saying.

"They were very pleasantly placed around the table so I couldn't get two in my eyeline. I sussed it and dragged my chair back so I couldn't get too close and I had each of them in my eyeline. They chose Steve in the end."

Wilkins also revealed that he was considered for the job at Molineux shortly after Mick McCarthy was sacked three years ago.
