A brace from Alvaro Saborio gave Real Salt Lake the victory over a spirited Vancouver Whitecaps on Friday night.
Saborio opened the scoring from the penalty spot after 34 minutes following a foul by Jay DeMerit on Kyle Beckerman.
Darren Mattocks equalised for the Whitecaps early in the second half, smashing the ball home off the woodwork from close range.
Saborio scored the winning goal on the hour mark, converting a smart header to keep Salt Lake in the hunt at the top of the MLS Western Conference.
Vancouver were reduced to 10 players late in the match when goalkeeper Joe Cannon was dismissed for handling outside the area.
