Kevin Anderson through to second round

Mikhail Youzhny retires with an elbow injury as Kevin Anderson progresses to the second round of the Paris Masters.

Kevin Anderson has progressed to the second round of the Paris Masters after his first-round opponent Mikhail Youzhny retired in the third set.

The 27-year-old South African was leading 2-1 in the final set when Youzhny pulled out with an injury to his right elbow.

Anderson lost a tight opening set 4-6 to the 31-year-old Russian but came back in the second to clinch it 7-6(0).

He looked to be course to victory in the contest when Youzhny had to retire.

Anderson will now face Roger Federer in the second round of the tournament.
