Newcastle United have reportedly been quoted a £17m figure by Besiktas for Cenk Tosun, effectively ruling them out of the running for the striker.
The 26-year-old recently emerged as a rumoured January target for Magpies boss Rafael Benitez, who hopes to be financially backed to strengthen his squad for the second half of the campaign.
According to the Newcastle Chronicle, United sent scouts to watch Tosun up close during a recent European match, but the Turkey international's transfer fee is currently out of their price range.
Tosun, also linked with a move to Crystal Palace in the past, has 10 goals in 14 matches for Besiktas this season, including a goal-a-game record in his four Champions League outings.
Newcastle's transfer record remains the £16.8m paid to Real Madrid to sign Michael Owen 12 years ago.
