Preview: Motherwell vs. St Mirren - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Wednesday's Scottish Premiership clash between Motherwell and St Mirren, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Motherwell will look to put an end to a three-game losing run on Wednesday, when they welcome St Mirren to Fir Park.

A dip in form has seen the hosts drop to sixth spot in the Scottish Premiership table, while their visitors sit one point worse off in seventh spot after a defeat of their own last time out.

Match preview

Motherwell enjoyed a strong start to the league campaign, winning four of their first seven games and collecting 14 points to move towards the top end of the division.

Graham Alexander's side have since experienced a slump though, and they now head into Wednesday on the back of three straight defeats in the Scottish top flight.

An unbeaten run was put to an end when they were handed a 2-0 defeat by high-flying Hearts, and Jota and David Turnbull got on the scoresheet to ensure Celtic won by the same scoreline at Fir Park.

The Well's losing run was stretched to three games on Saturday, as Tony Watt's equaliser at Dundee United was followed by a Charlie Mulgrew goal to ensure they left empty-handed.

Alexander will now be desperate for his side to arrest their slump sooner rather than later and make a return to winning ways to quickly climb the table.

They meet a side who sit just one point behind after 10 games, and the visitors will look to leapfrog their opponents with a win.

On the contrary to the Well, St Mirren had to endure a difficult start to the season, as they sat on just three points from the first five games.

They quickly found some form though, as a draw with Hibernian was followed by consecutive victories over Aberdeen, Ross County and Livingston.

Jim Goodwin's side now come into Wednesday on the back of a loss though, as they faced the daunting task of a clash with league leaders Rangers last time out.

Connor Ronan gave his side an unlikely early lead, but quickfire goals from Kemar Roofe and Alfredo Morelos meant that the defending champions escaped from a tough clash with all three points.

Having put up a commendable fight in that game, Goodwin's men will now look to return to their previous form when they travel to an out-of-sorts Motherwell side.

Team News

Motherwell will remain without midfielder Robbie Crawford, who has been ruled out for up to two months with an ankle injury.

Their line will be led by Tony Watt, who has netted five goals in 10 Scottish Premiership games this season.

He will likely be supported by Kevin van Veen and Kaiyne Woolery, while Callum Slattery offers additional quality in the midfield.

Following his side's creditable run of form, Goodwin is unlikely to make many changes to his St Mirren team on Wednesday.

Connor Ronan will keep his place in the attacking line, after netting his third goal of the season inside just six games on Saturday.

Eamonn Brophy and Jamie McGrath will likely complete the attacking trio, with Ethan Erhahon and Alan Power handling business in the engine room.

Motherwell possible starting lineup:
Kelly; O'Donnell, Mugabi, Ojala, McGinley; Goss, Grimshaw, Slattery; Van Veen, Watt, Woolery

St Mirren possible starting lineup:
Alnwick; Shaughnessy, McCarthy, Fraser; Millar, Power, Erhanon, Tanser; McGrath, Brophy, Ronan

We say: Motherwell 1-2 St Mirren

While we would normally opt for a draw between these two evenly-matched sides, Motherwell's current form may tilt the scales towards the visitors.

Having given a good account of themselves against Rangers, we anticipate Goodwin's team bouncing back to winning ways against an out-of-sorts side.
