Preview: Manchester United Women vs. Tottenham Hotspur Ladies - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Sunday's Women's FA Cup clash between Manchester United Women and Tottenham Hotspur Ladies, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Manchester United Women and Tottenham Hotspur Ladies will both have the chance to win their first major trophy when they go head-to-head in Sunday's Women's FA Cup final at Wembley.

Spurs are set to make their first appearance in an FA Cup final, while Man United are competing in the showpiece event for the second time after finishing runners-up to Chelsea last season.

On the whole, Man United have experienced an underwhelming campaign, losing in Champions League qualifying, suffering group-stage elimination in the League Cup as well as experiencing inconsistency in the Women's Super League.

After losing 1-0 to Liverpool last weekend, Man United are now sitting in fifth position and three points adrift of the Merseyside club, highlighting a significant drop-off from last season's second-placed finish.

However, the Red Devils could still make the 2023-24 campaign one to remember after reaching the FA Cup final for the second straight season.

Man United ousted Newcastle United, Southampton and Brighton & Hove Albion, before they avenged last year's final defeat with a 2-1 home victory over holders Chelsea thanks to first-half efforts from Lucia Garcia and Rachel Williams.

The Red Devils can take confidence from the fact that since being founded in 2018 they have never lost any of their 12 competitive meetings with Tottenham after Maya Le Tissier netted a stoppage-time equaliser to maintain that record in last month's league clash.

Meanwhile, Tottenham are preparing to make their first appearance in an FA Cup final after experiencing a tricky road to Wembley.

Spurs eliminated Sheffield United and Charlton Athletic, before they prevailed on penalties against Manchester City after Bethany England had netted a 96th-minute equaliser to keep her side in the competition.

Robert Vilahamn's side then fought back from behind to clinch a 2-1 extra-time victory in their semi-final meeting with Leicester City.

Since beating the Foxes, Spurs have gone on to play out three consecutive league draws with Man United, Brighton and Everton to leave them in sixth place with 28 points, representing a significant improvement on last season's 18-point tally.

The North London club will head into the final in a positive mood, having avoided defeat in each of their previous seven competitive matches since they lost 1-0 to their local rivals Arsenal at the beginning of March.

Team News

Manchester United Women manager Marc Skinner on March 23, 2024© Reuters

Man United boss Marc Skinner has reported no fresh injury concerns, but he is still without the services of Gabby George, Emma Watson and Jess Simpson.

After returning from injury to play the final half-hour against Liverpool, Jayde Riviere could come in to feature in a back four alongside Hannah Blundell, Millie Turner and Le Tissier.

Nikita Parris will offer one of Man United's main goal threats, having scored 16 goals in 28 competitive appearances this season.

Meanwhile, Tottenham defender Amy James-Turner should be available for selection after returning to training following a slight injury issue.

However, the Vilahamn will be unable to call upon Manchester United loanee Grace Clinton, who is ineligible to face her parent club.

Having scored in each of the last three matches, England will be looking to continue her fine run of form when she lines up against Man United.

Manchester United Women possible starting lineup:
Earps; Riviere, Le Tissier, Turner, Blundell; Zelem, Naalsund; Garcia, Toone, Galton; Parris

Tottenham Hotspur Ladies possible starting lineup:
Spencer; Neville, Turner, Bartrip, Nilden; Spence, Graham, Summanen; Naz, Vinberg; England

We say: Manchester United Women 1-1 Tottenham Hotspur Ladies

Tottenham have proven to be a tough team to beat in recent weeks, and we think that they will produce another resolute display to hold Man United to a draw in regulation time.

If the final does go to extra-time and penalties, we think that Spurs will draw upon their success from their last two cup outings to claim their first major trophy.
