Barcelona reportedly deal a blow to Arsenal and Chelsea's hopes of signing Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak.

Arsenal and Chelsea have reportedly been presented with a potential stumbling block in their efforts to sign Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak.

The Sweden international has established himself as a key player for Eddie Howe's side since he completed a move from Real Sociedad in the summer of 2022.

Isak has made 79 competitive appearances during his time with the Magpies, scoring 40 goals and providing seven assists.

The 25-year-old has netted four of those goals across his 10 Premier League appearances this season, although he was unable to find the net in Monday's 2-0 defeat against West Ham United.

While he may be one of Newcastle's most prized assets, Isak continues to be linked with a potential move away from St James' Park.

Arsenal, Chelsea dealt blow in Isak pursuit

London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea have both emerged as potential suitors, but the pair may have to see off a challenge from Barcelona if they are to secure Isak's services.

According to The Sun, the Catalan giants have made Isak their 'number one' target for next summer's transfer window, presenting a sizeable obstacle to Arsenal and Chelsea's hopes of signing the Swedish forward.

The report claims that Hansi Flick's side are preparing to launch a 'mega-money bid' to prise Isak away from the North East ahead of the 2025-26 season.

There is a belief that Barcelona have turned their attention to Isak after learning that their other target, Viktor Gyokeres, would prefer a move to the Premier League.

While Barcelona may be showing a keen interest, it is currently unclear whether they would be able to meet Newcastle's asking price due to their well-documented financial issues.

The Magpies are likely to demand around £115m to consider parting ways with a player who is under contract until the summer of 2028.

Why do Barcelona want to sign Isak?

On the face of it, Barcelona are not in desperate need of a new striker, with Robert Lewandowski continuing to perform at a high level.

The Poland international has been in impressive form this season, racking up 20 goals in 18 matches in all competitions.

However, the 36-year-old is not getting any younger, leaving Barcelona searching for a potential successor to their star striker.

The Catalan giants are also aware of the fact that they have little cover behind Lewandowski, which would present them with a problem if the veteran forward were to pick up an injury.

While they may decide to make do until the end of the season, Barcelona seemingly feel it is a position that needs strengthening ahead of next season.
