Manchester United have announced that Guillermo Varela has departed the club and rejoined Uruguayan side Penarol on a permanent deal.
Varela became United's first signing under former coach David Moyes after impressing the club with his appearances at the South American Youth Championship, leading United to first offer a trial to the defender, before handing the full-back a five-year deal.
The 24-year-old failed to impress following his move to Old Trafford, however, after making just 11 appearances prior to Jose Mourinho deciding to move Varela out on loan to Eintracht Frankfurt last season.
The club have now announced that the Uruguayan will return to his homeland in order to join the side that he left in 2013.
Mourinho's United get their new Premier League campaign underway when they face West Ham United at Old Trafford on Sunday.
