Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign Gareth Bale from Real Madrid.
The 31-year-old has been frozen out by Zinedine Zidane at Madrid and recently admitted that he would consider a return to the Premier League.
United had been considered the favourites to sign the Wales international, possibly on an initial loan, but ESPN reports that Spurs are his most likely destination.
Bale scored 56 goals in 203 appearances for Tottenham between 2007 and 2013 and is said to be aware of his former club's interest.
The report indicates that United's waiting game over Borussia Dortmund's Jadon Sancho has given Spurs the advantage, with the forward now weighing up a possible move to North London.
Jose Mourinho's side, who suffered a 1-0 loss to Everton in their opening Premier League game, will have to pay around £18m if they are to get a deal over the line.
