Louis van Gaal: 'Manchester United can compete for Premier League title'

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal insists that the Red Devils can challenge for the Premier League title after going up to second in the table

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has reiterated his belief that the Red Devils can challenge for the Premier League title.

New signing Anthony Martial bagged a brace as Man Utd beat Southampton 3-2 on Sunday.

The result has moved the Old Trafford side up to second in the table, two points behind title and city rivals Manchester City.

Van Gaal told reporters: "We have made a statement that we shall compete for the title. You cannot expect a title from a team in transition. But when we are close we shall grab it."

The Red Devils last won the Premier League in 2013.
