Manchester United's Michael Carrick 'not giving up' on Champions League spot

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick says that he and his teammates have not given up hope of finishing in the top four this season.

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has insisted that he and his teammates have "plenty to play for", despite suffering a setback in their top-four campaign.

Louis van Gaal's side dropped two points at Stamford Bridge on Sunday as Diego Costa cancelled out Jesse Lingard's strike to seal a 1-1 draw for Chelsea in the Premier League.

The Red Devils are fifth in the table, six points behind fourth-placed Manchester City and 12 points adrift of leaders Leicester City.

United are out of the Champions League, but they are in contention for FA Cup success and the Europa League crown.

"I think [the Chelsea game] was a big day for us in terms of the league situation," Carrick told the club's official website. "If we'd have gone there and got a win we'd have been in good shape, but it wasn't to be and it makes things harder for us.

"We have to battle on though, keep going and play something like we have been doing over the last few weeks and then see where that takes us.

"There is plenty to play for this month and of course plenty of points to play for in the league. We're not giving anything up just yet."

United's next game is against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.
