Louis van Gaal: 'FA Cup final not about my personal interests'

Louis van Gaal claims that the "interests of the club are much more important" than his own personal interests in this Saturday's FA Cup final.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has claimed that this weekend's FA Cup final showdown with Crystal Palace is purely about the club and not his own personal interests.

The Red Devils have a chance to end three years without any silverware at Wembley on Saturday, which many believe could ultimately decide the 64-year-old's fate.

Victory for United and the under-fire Dutchman may be kept on for the final year of his contract, but he insists that ending the club's trophy drought is of more importance to players and supporters.

"I think the interests of the club are much more important, and also the interests of the fans are much more important, than the manager," he is quoted as saying by Sky Sports News.

"Of course you have set your own aims and that is one of the aims I have had, always. But it is not good to speak about my interests, it is good to speak about the interests of the club. For the club, this is very important.

"I have read that the last FA Cup [win for United] was 2004, so it is a long time ago. It is always exciting when you are so close, but close is not enough, you have to win it."

Former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho remains the bookies' favourite to replace Van Gaal at United should he be axed in the coming weeks.
