Wigan manager Roberto Martinez describes his side's unlikely win over Liverpool at Anfield as a '"historic victory".

Roberto Martinez has described Wigan Atheltic's 2-1 win over Liverpool this afternoon as a 'historic victory'.

The Latics earned a vital three points in their battle against the drop as Shaun Maloney and Gary Caldwell goals secured them an unlikely win.

Martinez pointed to his side's team spirit and work rate as key factors in their triumph, which extended their unbeaten run to three games.

"There was a lot of effort and togetherness on that pitch. We kept the ball when we had to and defended well when we had to," said Martinez.

"We came in on a good run of form and the players showed great maturity. We had to suffer at times but we limited Liverpool to very little.

"It is a historic victory and a great win for the fans."

Despite the result, Wigan still sit in the relegation zone but are only one point off safety.
