Brendan Rodgers: 'Steven Gerrard's Liverpool departure isn't permanent'

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says that the door is open for Steven Gerrard to return to Anfield as a coach when he retires from playing.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has suggested that he wants Steven Gerrard to coach alongside him at Anfield when the midfielder retires from playing.

The 34-year-old will close the curtain on a 17-year career on Merseyside when he flies across the pond to join MLS side Los Angeles Galaxy in July.

The club captain will play his final game at Anfield on Saturday when the Reds take on Crystal Palace, but his last fixture for Liverpool will be away to Stoke City on May 24.

In this morning's press conference, Rodgers insisted that the door is open for Gerrard to return to Liverpool in some capacity when he retires, and the Northern Irishman has not ruled out a loan deal either.

"Steven leaving here isn't permanent," Rodgers told reporters. "He's somebody I'd love to have working with me when he's finished playing. That opportunity for him to come back will be there for as long as I'm here.

"We haven't spoken about [a loan deal] - that's maybe something we can look at another time."

Gerrard was recruited by Liverpool when he was eight years old.
