Steven Gerrard: 'Mario Balotelli, Rickie Lambert not good enough'

Steven Gerrard is unequivocal in his assertion that Liverpool need a 25-goal striker if they are serious about re-qualifying for the Champions League in the future.

Steven Gerrard has warned Liverpool that a world-class striker is needed in the summer if the club are to challenge for a Champions League spot next term.

The Reds have struggled for goals in their first season without Luis Suarez, with Daniel Sturridge starting just 12 games in all competitions during an injury-riddled campaign.

Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert have netted just three Premier League goals between them as Liverpool sit four points behind Manchester United with two games to play.

Consequently, Gerrard, who is leaving for Los Angeles Galaxy this summer, advises manager Brendan Rodgers to recruit a ready-made striker capable of firing the club back among Europe's elite.

"To get into the top four, you are going to need a striker who can score 25-30 goals a season. That is just the way it is. That is where we came short this season," he told The Mirror.

"It was always going to be tough when we lost Luis Suarez but I thought we could definitely finish in the top four positions if we kept Daniel Sturridge fit and he could perform like he did alongside Luis.

"I don't want to stand on the owners' or Brendan's toes – I am just speaking as a fan. But that is what we need to do. I wouldn't buy any more potential in the short-term. I would buy players that are ready to come and fight and win and be successful."

Saturday will see Gerrard play his final game at Anfield for the visit of Crystal Palace.
