Preview: Charlton Athletic vs. Leeds United

Sports Mole previews the Championship match between Charlton Athletic and Leeds United on Saturday.

Two teams with little left to play for meet in the Championship this Saturday when Charlton Athletic play host to Leeds United at The Valley.

Both sides are firmly established in mid-table, with Charlton sitting 12th on 57 points and Leeds three places behind on 52.

Charlton Athletic

Charlton will feel that they are more than capable of securing a top-half finish, despite their inconsistent form of late.

The Addicks have not tasted victory since they beat Reading 3-2 last month, while they drew 1-1 at Bolton Wanderers last time out.

Guy Luzon's side had threatened to gatecrash the playoff places following a run of seven wins from nine matches. However, their recent form has put paid to their hopes of promotion.

Luzon, though, will have seen enough from his side to suggest that a top-six place could be attainable next year and he will be looking to end this campaign in good form.

Charlton end their season with games against Birmingham City and league leaders Bournemouth.

Leeds United

Leeds have endured another disappointing campaign, with hopes of promotion hampered by a combination of inconsistency on the pitch and instability behind the scenes. The players, though, seem to be fully behind head coach Neil Redfearn as the campaign enters its final stages.

However, the Whites have been in poor form of late, losing their last four league games. The latest defeat was at the hands of promotion contenders Norwich City, who left Elland Road with a 2-0 victory on Tuesday.

Despite their recent slump, a top-half finish is not out of reach and a win at The Valley this weekend would close the gap between them and Charlton in 12th to two points.

As it stands, Redfearn has three games left in charge before his deal expires in the summer, and it remains to be seen if he will be kept on by the Yorkshire outfit. The Leeds boss will be looking to end the season on a high, even if his future remains uncertain.

Team News

Luzon may be tempted to stick with the same Charlton side that put in a credible performance at Bolton. This would see Rhoys Wiggins, Alou Diarra and Tony Watt remain in the side along with Frederic Bulot, who scored at the Macron Stadium.

Chris Eagles is in contention to start, but the game will probably come too soon for Johnnie Jackson, who is close to making his return from a broken leg.

Leeds boss Redfearn has suggested that, after his team's poor performances of late, he will give some youth prospects first-team experience in the final games of the season. Academy product Kalvin Phillips and Granddi Ngoyi, who made his debut against Norwich, could be handed starts.

Lewis Cook will miss the game with an ankle injury, while Rodolph Austin is unavailable due to suspension.

Charlton Athletic possible starting lineup:
Henderson, Solly, Wiggins, Diarra, Johnson, Gudmundsson, Buyens, Cousins, Bulot, Vetokele, Watt

Leeds United possible starting lineup:
Silvestri, Wootton, Bamba, Cooper, Berardi, Murphy, Ngoyi, Mowatt, Phillips, Byram, Sharp

Head To Head

There was nothing to separate the two sides in the reverse fixture back in November, when braces from Alex Mowatt and Johann Gudmundsson saw a 2-2 draw played out at Elland Road.

Leeds emerged victors on their last visit to The Valley in November 2013, when Ross McCormack netted all four goals in a 4-2 win.

The Whites have a slightly better record than Charlton when the sides meet at The Valley, with 12 wins to Charlton's 10.

We say: Charlton Athletic 1-0 Leeds United

Both sides have been in poor form of late, but with Charlton having home advantage and Leeds coming into this off the back of four defeats in a row, the Addicks should be capable of picking up a win.
