Wolverhampton Wanderers have gone six points clear at the top of the Championship table thanks to a 3-1 win over Burton Albion.

Helder Costa gave Wolves an early lead before Benik Afobe rifled into the top corner on 41 minutes to double the hosts' advantage.

Although Lloyd Dyer's half-volley halved Burton's deficit before the break, Afobe grabbed his second on 56 minutes to make sure of all three points.

At the opposite end of the table, Garry Monk earned his first win as Birmingham City boss with a 3-0 victory over Hull City.

A Jota brace, either side of Che Adams's strike, ended a run of seven successive defeats for the Blues and saw them draw level on points with 21st-placed Barnsley.

Fellow strugglers Sunderland did not have such luck, losing 2-0 at home to Preston North End to remain bottom as Jake Clarke-Salter was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Elland Road, meanwhile, hosted a thrilling Yorkshire derby as Adthe Nuhiu scored an injury-time winner to help Sheffield Wednesday claim a 2-1 win over Leeds United.

Another exciting encounter took place at Norwich City, where the hosts earned their first win in seven games by holding on to secure a 3-2 victory against struggling Reading.

Middlesbrough held on to sixth place in the table with a 1-1 draw at Brentford, though Bristol City, Preston and Sheffield United are now all within two points of Boro.

Elsewhere, Bristol City claimed a 1-0 home win over Ipswich Town and Sheffield United played out a goalless draw against Nottingham Forest.

Earlier in the day, Fulham were held to a 2-2 draw by a plucky Queens Park Rangers side, while Millwall ran out 2-0 winners at struggling Barnsley.

Results in full: Fulham 2-2 Queens Park Rangers, Barnsley 0-2 Millwall, Birmingham City 3-0 Hull City, Brentford 1-1 Middlesbrough, Bristol City 1-0 Ipswich Town, Leeds United 1-2 Sheffield Wednesday, Norwich City 3-2 Reading, Sheffield United 0-0 Nottingham Forest, Sunderland 0-2 Preston North End, Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-1 Burton Albion
