FC Koln, FC Ingolstadt 04 into top six after draw

Marvin Matip's header cancels out Anthony Modeste's early goal as FC Koln are held to a draw by newly-promoted FC Ingolstadt 04.

FC Koln and FC Ingolstadt 04 are into the European places in the Bundesliga after playing out a draw at the Rhein Energie Stadion.

The visitors, playing their first season in Germany's top flight, nearly took the lead inside two minutes after Markus Suttner's shot from the edge of the area drifted narrowly wide of Timo Horn's goal.

Suttner was again involved on nine minutes as he fired a low drive towards the bottom corner, but saw his effort tipped away by Horn.

Instead, it was Koln who took the lead moments later after Marcel Risse crossed for Anthony Modeste and the former France Under-21 international's header proved too good for Ramazan Ozcan.

However, Ingolstadt were back on level terms midway through the first half as Marvin Matip headed Pascal Gross's cross beyond the reach of Horn.

Koln missed chances to restore their lead through Simon Zoller and Frederik Sorensen, whilst Stefan Lex and Alfredo Morales also squandered chances to give the visitors a half-time lead.

Matthew Leckie twice went close to grabbing a late winner for Ingolstadt, but failed to convert his efforts at goal.

Yuya Osako's strike was kept out by Ozcan in the dying minutes, but a draw sees both sides climb into the Europa League places and move level on points with fourth-placed Wolfsburg.
