Sports Mole dissects the 90 minutes of action between Group C rivals Italy and Republic of Ireland.

Italy booked their spot in the quarter-finals of Euro 2012 following a 2-0 victory over Republic of Ireland on Monday.

It was far from easy for the Italians, and they were made to sweat before Mario Balotelli scored their second late on.

Spain also recorded victory over Croatia to top Group C and now they must wait on tomorrow's results to see who they will face in the next round.

Here, Sports Mole dissects the 90 minutes action between Italy and Ireland.

Was the result fair?

In a word, yes. That's not to say that Ireland did not show heart and desire. But Italy were simply superior in all departments and they deserve their spot in the latter stages.

Italy's performance

The Italians did not start the match particularly well but they managed to gain a foot-hold after taking the lead courtesy of Antonio Cassano. It wasn't the most elegant of performances, but they passed the ball well, and defended well – as is so often the case.

Ireland's performance

Fantastic heart from the Irish tonight. They started well, and finished well. Unfortunately the period between wasn't particularly impressive. If we are being harsh, they were out of their depth in this tournament. However, tonight was by far their most impressive performance of Euro 2012.

Sports Mole's man of the match

Federico Balzaretti: The 30-year-old Parma defender was absolutely superb this evening. Strong in the tackle and a menace in attack. It was a fantastic display from the Italian.

Referee performance

It was quite a busy night for Cuneyt Cakir. He was guilty of too often bringing back play for slight injuries when perhaps the game should have been allowed to continue. He also dismissed Ireland midfielder Keith Andrews late on, and rightly so.

Biggest gaffe of match

Mario Balotelli: The Manchester City man scored a wonderful goal late on but then gestured to the bench and his manager. It wasn't a smart move.

What next?

Italy: The Italians secure second spot in Group C following their win. They will face the winner of Group D in the quarter-finals.

Ireland: That's it for Ireland. Their disappointing Euro 2012 campaign leaves them bottom of Group C with zero points.
